Keeps the world turning

Keeps the world turning, originally uploaded by robgt.

Finding the special in the everyday: this is a wheel on a car (BMW 530i if you're interested). So what?

At 60mph this wheel and tyre will revolve 787.26 times every minute. The ten thin alloy spokes have to be strong enough to not break, even if the car is fully loaded with 5 adults and a boot full of luggage. At up to 145mph. For 100,000 miles plus. The material has to cope with extremes of temperature across the world, because you choose to drive from Alaska to Chile. It has 5 wheel nuts because 4 wouldn't be strong enough to bear the weight of this size of car.

And it has to look good!

Special? I think so!

(P.S. It's also my favourite wheel design in recent years...)

I am not a car enthusiast by any means but there is definitely something about a nice alloy!

And the way you describe it does make it even more impressive!

Is that your car?
