I've stood at Ground Zero a couple of times. The first time was 10 October 2001 just a month after the WTC fell. The surrounding streets were still covered in thick ash, the smell was awfull and there was a dreadful silence. I couldn't get my camera out. It just seemed so wrong.

The second time was a couple of years ago when, like in your photo, the site had been cleared. Now there is just a huge hole. That in itself is amazing for NYC!

Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Center, feels like holy ground, I guess like many other places which have seen so much death.

My first time there to see it was April 2003 when there was still a free picture thingy and timeline up outside. It was very rainy, cold, dank and depressing. i was pushed to silence.

These provided me with some hope even though the sadness never completely dissipates.
